Antral Follicle Count (AFC): ovarian reserve

Antral Follicle Count (AFC) with Ovarian Volume by 3D Ultrasound

A normal Antral Follicle Count indicates that a woman need have no concerns about the current status of her ovarian reserve. A 3D AFC ultrasound scan of the ovaries can help in accurately predicting Ovarian Reserve. The Antral Follicle Count in fertile women is normally between two and twenty follicles each ovary. The scan gives the clearest results if performed in the early follicular phase of the cycle, between days one and seven of the menstrual cycle.

Generally, count in each ovary is indicative of ovarian reserve as follows:
2 or less follicles – Very Low Ovarian Reserve
3 – 6 follicles – Low Ovarian Reserve
7 – 10 follicles – Average Ovarian Reserve
11 – 20 follicles – Above Average Ovarian Reserve

The AFC ultrasound and AMH blood tests in combination will help give information to the clinician to guide women planning to undertake infertility or IVF treatment and to advise women who wish to know about their ovarian reserve.
