What's next for infertility patients who failed IVF

The ride of fertility treatment is emotionally and physically exhausting. The feelings after failing the IVF treatment can be more depressed, angry, disappointed, discouraged and devastating. It will take a while to recover physically, emotionally and financially.

As practitioner of Chinese Medicine, my heart always feel the weight of their sorrow, the same to those patients with other kinds of disorders.

Most of time, there are not specific causes found for the multiple failures of IVF. Patients have to choose to continue with the procedures or similar ones (GIFT,ZIFT, etc) or give-up. Chinese Medicine including acupuncture, as hoslistic medicine addressing body, mind and spirit, is rightfully fitting into this jigsaw part.

There has been some studies on the use of herb formula treating repeated failure of IVF.

Following is a research done by Dr. Jin Bao-fang of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, an analysis on How TCM Cure Infertility after Recurrent Failure of IVF-ET with Unknown Cause.

Abstract

Objectives: To analyze possible mechanism of traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) curing infertility after recurrent failure of IVF-ET with unknown cause and mechanism of abortion prevention by TCM, and to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of TCM treatment.

Methods: Based on the theory of tonifying the kidney and regulating menstrual circle, combination of syndrome and disease differentiation in TCM, 480 patients after recurrent failure of IVF-ET with unknown cause was treated and the resluts were statisted after a total of 980 treatment cycles. In addition, pregnant women were treated with TCM to prevent abortion.

Results: Out of 480 patients 52 achieved natural pregnancy. All the 52 patients with natural pregnancy were advised to taking abortion-prevented formulas (APF). Among the 42 patients persisting in taking APF, 40 patients experienced normal pregnancy or successful delivery, only 1 patient was aborted and 1 was ectopic pregnancy . In sharp contrast, among the 10 patients who had not persisted with APF for this or that reasons, only 1 patient got normal delivery, and the other 9 patients were suffered from embryo developing stop or abortion.

Conclusion: It is a beneficial trial to treat recurrent failure of IVF-ET with unknown cause by TCM which can induce natural pregnancy. Moreover, it is necessary to use TCM for abortion prevention after pregnancy.
